The Union Cabinet has approved a contract with engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) to acquire three cadet training ships from L&T for Rs 3,108.09 crore.
The Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that ship deliveries will begin in 2026.
‘The government has announced that the Union Cabinet has approved the acquisition of three Cadet Training Ships from L&T under the Buy Indian-IDDM category, costing a total of Rs3,108.09 crore. The contract signing has been approved and is ready to take place,” stated the ministry.
These ships will train officer cadets, including women, at sea after completing their basic training to meet the Indian Navy’s future needs.
The ships will be designed, developed, and built entirely in India at the L&T shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai.
Over a span of four and a half years, the project is expected to generate 22.5 lakh man-days of employment, contributing to the growth and development of Indian shipbuilding and associated industries, including MSMEs. The statement highlights that this initiative will encourage their active participation, further promoting the country’s economy.
These vessels will be proud flag bearers of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ with the majority of the equipment and systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, in accordance with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, it added.
