According to an official statement released on Thursday (16-06-2022), the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways are financially sponsoring 45 Ro-Ro (roll-on-roll-off) ferry projects worth Rs 1,900 crore.
The ministry also announced the launch of a Ro-Pax (roll-on-roll-off passenger) ferry service between Ghogha and Hazira in Gujarat and Mumbai and Mandwa in Maharashtra.
More than 7 lakh passengers and 1.5 lakh cars have been moved using these services, resulting in a cleaner environment and improved public welfare.
Additional developments are planned in Pipavav and Muldwarka in Gujarat, as well as Ghodbunder, Veldur, Vasai, Kashid, Rewas, Manori, and JN Port in Maharashtra, due to the success of these projects and significant demand and potential, according to the statement.
After taking into account the preliminary comments received from stakeholders, the ministry has developed a draught of “Guidelines for Operationalization of Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax Ferry Services Along the Indian Coast.”
According to the statement, these standards will standardize and streamline the creation and operation of ferry services, as well as promote the convenience of doing business by minimizing needless delays, resolving conflicts, and using digital interventions at the consumer interface.
The recommendations will also assist state/UT governments and port authorities in implementing such projects by standardizing procedures, according to the statement.
