H125 Takes Off in India: Airbus, Tata to assemble popular chopper in Gujarat

26 Jan 2024 , 10:05 AM

A contract has been reached by European aviation giant Airbus and Tata Group to co-manufacture H125 single-engine helicopters for commercial use at their assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat. The two companies will also co-manufacture at least 40 C-295 transport planes in India. The Gujarati assembly line will be overseen by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).

Single-engine helicopters are in high demand in India among HNIs for medical emergencies, commodities transportation and other uses, according to officials close to the development. ‘There is already an immediate ready demand by interested buyers for at least 600-800 such helicopters,’ a government source stated.

Airbus’s single-engine H130 (formerly known as the EC130 T2) is widely used for sightseeing services, VIP duties, medical airlift, and surveillance operations, from popular tourist areas to the busy airspace over cities.

The agreement will be revealed on Friday in time for French President Emmanuel Macron to arrive in India for the Strategic Partnership’s 25th anniversary festivities. He’s going to the Republic Day festivities in Delhi, the nation’s capital. Macron has been asked to attend the 75th Republic Day celebrations on January 26 as the primary guest.

As part of an agreement for Rs 21,935 crores that was announced a year ago, Airbus and the Tata group of India are also working together to jointly manufacture C-295 transport aircraft in India for defence uses. TASL will oversee the final assembly line, which will be located in Vadodara, Gujarat. In recent years, the Tata Group and Airbus have announced a number of agreements. The greatest aviation deal in the history of Air India was unveiled early last year when the Tata group revealed plans to purchase 250 Airbus aircraft.
