Global retailers Zara and H&M rose to the top of the fast fashion sector in India over the previous ten years. However, Uniqlo claimed that both globally and in India, shoppers are choosing long-lasting, ecological clothing over inexpensive, mass-produced apparel.
India, the second-most populous nation in the world, is a desirable market for clothing companies, especially because young people are embracing western fashion more and more. Contrary to its fast-fashion competitors, which are known for their designs that are quickly transitioned from the runway to the showroom, Uniqlo is well-known throughout the world for its practical basics including T-shirts, jeans, and woollen clothing.
H&M and Zara both carry fast fashion items made in-house and collaborate with designers on seasonal collections. They maintain a sizable stock of fundamental, everyday commodities with lower prices than most of their competitors, imported from countries like Bangladesh and India.
The Japanese retailer debuted its first location in India in September 2019, but strict lockdown procedures were introduced in March 2020 to stop the pandemic from spreading. Due to the delay, it was only able to open six additional stores. As part of its expansion strategy, Uniqlo said it will expand into new cities and add additional stores, but initially, it would concentrate on north India. The business will open its first location outside of Delhi NCR in Lucknow the following week.
The company set a goal of getting 15% of its overall revenue from e-commerce when it opened its online store in July 2021, a goal it has reached.
The majority of businesses in the apparel and leisure sectors are dealing with supply chain challenges on a worldwide scale, which has increased the cost of product manufacturing and shipping.
