A report has revealed that India’s import of coal surged by 32% to reach 148.58 million tonnes (MT) in the period of April-February FY23, compared to the same period the previous year when it was at 112.38 MT.
According to the report, the import of coking coal has also increased by 7.69% to 50.50 MT during April-February FY23, in contrast to 46.89 MT in the corresponding period in the previous year.
The import of non-coking coal in the month of February 2023 was recorded at 11.68 MT, which marks an increase from the same month in the previous year when it was at 9.42 MT.
In February 2023, India imported 4.40 MT of coking coal, which represents a rise from the quantity imported in February 2022 when it was at 4.03 MT.
India is one of the leading coal producers globally, ranking among the top five countries. Nonetheless, even as a major consumer of coal, the country still relies on imports to fulfill certain portions of its coal needs.
The healthy stock position and the growth in domestic supply could limit the volume of imports in the upcoming months.
