According to government data, India’s power consumption increased by more than 11% to 121.19 billion units in December 2022 from the previous year. The robust growth in power consumption indicates that economic activity remained strong in December.
As per the experts, power consumption and demand will rise further in January due to the use of heating appliances, particularly in the country’s northern regions, as well as further improvement in economic activity.
According to the data, power consumption in December 2021 was 109.17 billion units (BU), up from 105.62 BU in the same month in 2020.
In December 2022, the peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, increased to 205.03 Gigawatt (GW).
The peak power supply in December 2021 was 183.24 GW, up from 182.78 GW in December 2020.
In the pre-pandemic month of December 2019, the peak power demand met was 170.49 GW. In December 2019, electricity consumption was 101.08 BU.
