IndiGo considering code-sharing with airlines in US, UK

6 Mar 2023 , 09:39 AM

On Sunday, IndiGo announced that it is considering using its alliance with Turkish Airlines to enable codeshare access to the US and Canada. The airline has been given permission by the civil aviation ministry to wet lease up to two aircraft to operate flights to the United States and Canada, a senior official told PTI on Friday.

IndiGo on Sunday responded to inquiries on the matter by various news outlets stating that while it continually assesses and discusses potential with aircraft manufacturers, at this point, it is all merely speculative.

‘At this time, our goal is to allow codeshare connection to the US and Canada via our collaboration with Turkish Airlines after the necessary application and approval process,’ the statement stated.

An airline can offer smooth travel to locations where it has no presence by using codesharing to book its passengers on partner airlines.

Air India is beginning to ramp up its foreign operations, and the airline is also planning to grow its fleet by ordering new aircraft.

In February, IndiGo began running wide-body Boeing 777s on the Delhi-Istanbul route. Turkish Airlines has given the jet to the low-cost carrier on a wet lease, marking the debut of wide-body service for the latter.

The operating crew and engineers are leased along with the planes under the wet lease arrangement. Wet leasing of aircraft is typically permitted for brief durations to address supply issues and prevent a substantial increase in airfares.

The airline currently operates a fleet of more than 300 aircraft, and another 500 are being ordered according to news reports.

With over 1,800 daily flights and the largest domestic market share in the nation, IndiGo is planning to fly to more foreign locations while concentrating on expanding its international operations.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers stated in a February interview with PTI that the company has always maintained the possibility of using wide-body planes open but withheld further information.
