According to Marriott Hotels India’s Area Vice-President South Asia, Ranju Alex, the company intends to have 200 properties in India by 2025, capitalizing on the expansion of the nation’s smaller cities. She stated during her speech at the Hoteliers’ Conclave 2022 that Tier II and Tier III cities in India are experiencing unprecedented growth.
When questioned about the business’s aspirations to expand in India, Alex responded, “We presently have 141 hotels–106 managed and 35 franchised–in our portfolio. Currently, 67 hotels are being built or are in various phases of construction. By 2025, we will likely have 200 hotels.”
In truth, she continued, “we open anywhere between 15 and 20 hotels every single year,” but the pandemic saw a spike in hotel signings that “will express itself around the 2025—26 era.”
“We signed the most hotels possible during Covid. There is a feeling of hope within the owner community that things will work out, which is why there have been so many signings. I believe there is optimism about this industry’s future growth in the nation, Alex stated.
She acknowledged that there are difficulties in obtaining finance and that it is difficult “to get the bureaucracy out of the way and really get into a hotel, standardize, and then operate,” but added that “things are getting better.”
