Mega project: L&T Construction to build giant renewable power plant in UAE

30 Jan 2024 , 01:20 AM

turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) arm of Larsen & Toubro’s Power Transmission & Distribution business has been selected.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is now in its sixth phase of development. Every year, this plant will cut about 2.4 Million tonnes of carbon emissions.

The project, which covers 20 square km, will be operationalized in three stages. The scope of work also includes relevant evacuation and connectivity plans, such as two Gas Insulated Substations, high voltage underground cabling, and medium voltage distribution networks, in addition to the photovoltaic facility.

The project’s power purchase agreement was signed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s leading sustainable energy company, and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). DEWA is the only entity that will purchase power produced by the plant, keeping a 60% ownership in the venture.

Based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the world’s largest single-site solar park. When it is finished, it will have the potential to produce 5,000 MW by 2030, saving more than 6.5 Million tonnes of carbon emissions yearly. The strategic goal of DEWA to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 both heavily rely on the Solar Park.

‘We thank Masdar and DEWA, who are our longstanding customers, for their support in this project,’ stated Mr. T. Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Sr. Executive Vice President (Utilities), Larsen & Toubro, in response to the development. Our dedication lies in using our cutting-edge renewable energy solutions and project management know-how to expedite the energy transition in the region that seeks to balance sustainable practices with economic development.
