Benchmark indices closed higher on October 17, with Nifty surpassing the 19,800 mark, supported by widespread buying across sectors. The Sensex concluded with a gain of 261.16 points or 0.39%, settling at 66,428.09, while the Nifty recorded an increase of 79.70 points or 0.40%, closing at 19,811.50.
Of the total stocks, 2,102 saw advances, 1,451 witnessed declines, and 142 remained unchanged. Top Nifty gainers included BPCL, Power Grid Corporation, SBI Life Insurance, HDFC Life, and Coal India, while Tata Motors, L&T, UPL, IndusInd Bank, and TCS were among the losers.
All sectoral indices closed in positive territory, with the power index up by 1%, and FMCG, PSU Bank, metal, and oil & gas indices gained 0.5%. The BSE Midcap index saw a 0.4% increase, and the Smallcap index posted a gain of 0.7%. The Indian rupee concluded the day steady at 83.26 per dollar, unchanged from the previous day’s close of 83.28.
