Ola Electric receives government notice to explain e-scooter fires

23 Jun 2022 , 10:30 AM

According to media reports, Ola Electric has received a notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which is a division of the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, about the recent events involving electric scooter fires.

Ola Electric has been given 15 days by the CCPA to respond to the notification, according to media reports. Midway through June, the notification was given. Following the explosion of their e-scooters last month, the CCPA sent notifications to Pure EV and Boom Motors.

According to several persons acquainted with the development, the consumer watchdog has urged Ola Electric to explain the causes for the fire and provide the specifics of quality standards after suo moto became aware of incidences of fires being recorded in electric vehicles.

Ola Electric recalled 1,441 of its electric two-wheelers in April. In addition to being in compliance with the European standard ECE 136, the company claimed that its battery systems already meet and have been tested for AIS 156, the most recent proposed standard for India. To be in line with nations like Japan, Germany, and the US, the Indian government is updating AIS-156.

Electric two-wheeler fires have been reported often in recent months around the nation, leading manufacturers to recall their products.

After an explosion at one of its two-wheelers in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, purportedly resulted in the death of a 40-year-old man, Boom Motors recalled its electric two-wheelers sold under the Corbett Bikes brand in the final week of April.

Following the death of an 80-year-old man in Telangana’s Nizamabad due to an alleged explosion of a scooter’s battery, Pure EV made the decision to recall almost 2,000 of its scooters.
