Benchmark indices closed lower on December 7th, ending the seven-day winning streak that had driven markets upwards. The session was marked by volatility, with a final decline of 132.04 points (0.19%) for the Sensex, settling at 69,521.69. The Nifty followed suit, closing at 20,901.20, down 36.50 points (0.17%).
While 1893 listed stocks saw advances during the day, 1342 declined and 81 remained unchanged. Top losers on the Nifty included Bharti Airtel, HUL, ONGC, Apollo Hospitals, and Tata Steel. Conversely, Power Grid Corporation, Adani Ports, UltraTech Cement, Cipla, and Grasim Industries emerged as the biggest gainers.
Sectoral performance was mixed. The auto and healthcare sectors gained 0.5% each, while the oil & gas index rose by 1% and the power index surged nearly 3%. However, the FMCG and metal indices fell by 0.5% each.
The broader market also saw movement, with the BSE midcap index recording a 0.7% rise and the smallcap index experiencing a modest 0.3% increase.
