Tata Power mulls new transmission corridor for Mumbai

29 Mar 2023 , 02:45 PM

Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has proposed to the state government and the state regulatory authority the construction of a high voltage 400 KV line corridor for Mumbai.

This new 400 KV transmission corridor will help meet the city’s growing electricity demand and expand electricity distribution to up to 15,000 MW in the future.

This project, if approved, could take four to five years and cost around Rs 1,000 crore. The transmission line will be in the shape of a ring with two 30 km hemispheres. When one hemisphere fails, the other serves as a backup.

Currently, 110 KV and 220 KV lines serve Mumbai’s demand of around 3,500 MW.

Tata Power also stated that there will be no power shortages in Mumbai this summer, and that load growth will be lower than national load growth.

Tata Power controls roughly 70% of Mumbai’s power transmission. On October 12, 2020, Mumbai experienced a power outage that lasted up to 12 hours in some areas. After that, there were two more outages, both of lesser magnitude.

Tata Power expects Mumbai’s peak power demand to reach 4,000 MW this summer, up from the 3,300 MW seen in recent days as temperatures rise.

Over the course of the last five years, the company has allocated Rs 2,300 crore towards enhancing its transmission infrastructure, which involved replacing almost 90% of the outdated systems. In the coming fiscal year, the company intends to invest an additional Rs 700 crore towards further improving its transmission capabilities.
