TRAI: Airtel adds over 710,000 users in Jan-22; Jio, Vodafone subscribers decline

According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea reported a MoM (month on month) fall in mobile subscribers while Bharti Airtel reported gains in January 2022.

Bharti Airtel is the only telco to add subscribers in January 2022, gaining 714,199 users to close with 356.5 million subscribers, Reliance Jio lost 9.3 million users to end the month with 406.4 million subscribers and Vodafone Idea lost another 389,082 users to close at 265.1 million.

Bharti Airtel has the maximum proportion (98.18%) of its active wireless subscribers (VLR) as against its total wireless subscribers (HLR) on the date of peak VLR in the month of January-22 and MTNL has the minimum proportion of VLR (18.37%) of its HLR during the same period.

As on 31st January, 2022, the private access service providers held 89.76% market share of the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 10.24%.

In the month of January, 2022, 9.53 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 661.42 million at the end of December-21 to 670.95 million at the end of January-22, since implementation of MNP. The number of telephone subscribers in India decreased from 1,178.41 million at the end of December-21 to 1,169.46 million at the end of January-22, thereby showing a monthly decline rate of 0.76%. Urban telephone subscription decreased from 655.20 million at the end of December-21 to 649.38 million at the end of January-22 and the rural subscription also decreased from 523.21 million to 520.08 million during the same period. The monthly decline rates of urban and rural telephone subscriptions were 0.89% and 0.60% respectively during the month of January-22, as per TRAI data.

Total wireless subscribers decreased from 1,154.62 million at the end of December-21 to 1,145.24 million at the end of January-22, thereby registering a monthly decline rate of 0.81%.

As on 31st January, 2022, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (4.83 million), Bharti Airtel (4.33 million), BSNL (3.90 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (2.04 million) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (1.10 million). As on 31st January, 2022, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (406.39 million), Bharti Airtel (206.42 million), Vodafone Idea (121.07 million), BSNL (22.35 million) and Intech Online Pvt. Ltd. (0.21 million).
