The University of Glasgow has introduced a new combined degree in Neuroscience and Psychology this year.

The programme combines elements from both disciplines which are offered by the School of Psychology and the School of Life Sciences, with teaching informed by research from the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology.

Professor David Maxwell, organiser of the fourth year in neuroscience, said: “We introduced this new programme for several reasons – we had requests from students at open days for such a programme and we had also recently created an Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology which brought together researchers in this field.
“It is a nice merging of the two fields so students can understand the brain at different levels – from how molecules operate within nerve cells to how individuals interact with each other.

“We believe this programme will be popular and we had already have a good number of students on the course which started in September. Neuroscience is a growing subject across the world, and increasing in popularity as it is seen as an area of cutting edge research.”

The programme sees students study psychology in years 1 and 2, along with biology.
Year three consists of the same content as the third year of the neuroscience honours degree, while year 4 comprises the third year of the honours psychology course, with the addition of an independent research project.

The programme costs £16,500 (R16.4 lakh) and a range of scholarships are available for students applying from India (http://www.gla.ac.uk/scholarships/international/undergraduate/)

Career opportunities for graduates exist in research and medicine, as well as a range of other jobs where knowledge of psychology and neuroscience would be useful, such as marketing and computer sciences. The programme is also accredited by the British Psychological Society, and this accreditation provides greater career opportunities.
