KPI Green Energy Ltd on Wednesday, December 17, announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Botswana government to jointly develop large-scale renewable energy projects. The partnership will focus on solar and wind energy generation, energy storage solutions, and strengthening the country’s transmission infrastructure.
The agreement is designed to help Botswana enhance its energy security while positioning the nation as a clean power exporter in the Southern African region. The planned investment is around $4 billion, equivalent to approximately ₹36,000 crore, and is expected to increase the country’s renewable energy capacity to nearly 5 gigawatts.
Under the MoU, KPI Green Energy will oversee the technical and commercial aspects of the projects. This includes conducting feasibility studies, designing projects, arranging financing, handling construction, commissioning, and managing the long-term operation and maintenance of renewable energy and storage assets.
The collaboration also covers upgrading existing high-voltage transmission lines and constructing new ones to strengthen connections within Botswana and with neighbouring countries. This will help improve regional power transmission and support a more integrated electricity network.
In a move to build local expertise, KPI Green Energy will sponsor 30 scholarships every year for Botswana students. The program will focus on renewable energy, engineering, sustainability, and related fields. The initiative aims to create a skilled workforce, promote knowledge transfer, and empower the youth to actively contribute to Botswana’s clean energy transition.
The MoU represents a significant step for KPI Green Energy’s international growth and supports Botswana’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. The agreement was signed between Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy and KP Group, which includes KPI Green Energy Ltd, KP Energy Ltd, and KP Green Engineering Ltd.
