Adani Power to start exporting power to Bangladesh from December

7 Sep 2022 , 08:41 AM

Tycoon Gautam Adani plans to start exporting power from a coal-fired facility in eastern India to Bangladesh by the end of the year, alleviating Bangladesh’s energy challenges.

Adani Power Ltd. declared on Twitter that it will start up a 1.6-gigawatt plant in the state of Jharkhand and a specific transmission line for the exports by December 16 after having a meeting with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi late on Monday.

The initiative highlights India’s efforts to use infrastructure as a part of its diplomatic outreach to neighbors. The wealthiest man in Asia, Adani, has investments in Sri Lanka in addition to his massive economic empire, which includes ports, infrastructure, and energy.

Bangladesh has been dealing with an energy imbalance as a result of the rising costs of commodities like coal and gas brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to the US Department of Commerce, in order to preserve its export-oriented economy, it continues to be mostly dependent on imported fossil fuels for power and aims to quadruple its power-producing capacity by 2041.

Despite the fact that Jharkhand is one of the most important coal-mining regions in India, the plant would mostly use fuel that is imported from overseas, according to a 2017 approval document from the environment ministry. Adani’s plan has drawn criticism since it would be prohibitively expensive to move coal by rail from places like Australia and South Africa to the project.
