The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) has awarded Bharti-backed low earth orbit (LEO) satellite startup OneWeb the required regulatory permits to offer commercial broadband services in India.
OneWeb, which recently concluded a merger with France’s Eutelsat, is the first firm in India to receive IN-SPACe approval.
With IN-SPACe clearance, Eutelsat OneWeb has obtained the essential approvals and now awaits spectrum allocation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to begin commercial connection services.
IN-SPACe is the Government of India organisation in charge of regulating space operations and providing permission to perform them in the country.
Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Group and Vice-President (Co-Chair) of the Board of Directors of Eutelsat Group, stated that Eutelsat OneWeb is ready to deploy as soon as it obtains final spectrum permission to commence commercial services.
Any firm seeking to provide satcom services in India must get IN-SPACe clearance, a global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) licence, and spectrum from the DoT. OneWeb has already been awarded a licence, and IN-SPACe has given its approval.
