BRICS nations to continue to debate the process of expansion: Declaration

24 Jun 2022 , 09:06 AM

The presidents of the BRICS nations–Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa–said on Thursday (23-06-2022) that they will keep talking about whether or not to allow additional nations to join the club of five on the basis of “complete consultation and consensus.”

A statement released at the conclusion of a BRICS virtual summit held by China said, “We note with pleasure the progress made in BRICS institutional development and underline that BRICS cooperation needs to accept changes and remain ahead of the times.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Presidents Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia, Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa all took part in the virtual summit. According to the proclamation, “We shall continue to establish clear priorities in our extensive cooperation, on the basis of consensus, and enhance the effectiveness, viability, and results-oriented nature of our strategic relationship.”

“We favor encouraging BRICS members to have conversations on the organization’s growth. We emphasize the necessity for a complete consultation and consensus in order to determine the guiding principles, standards, criteria, and processes for this expansion process through the Sherpas’ channel “It read.

The five leaders highlighted the work being done to expand cooperation to other Emerging Markets and Developing Countries (EMDCs) and support further promoting the BRICS Outreach and BRICS Plus Cooperation in accordance with the updated terms of reference adopted by the BRICS Sherpas in 2021 through inclusive, equal-footed, and flexible practices and initiatives.

The proclamation also commended China’s Chairship for organizing a conversation session on May 19, 2022, as part of the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations, with the subject “Increased Role of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries in Global Governance.” The virtual Dialogue of Foreign Ministers Between BRICS and Emerging Markets and Developing Countries was presided over by the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last month.

Foreign ministers from the BRICS nations, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Senegal, as well as delegates from the foreign ministries of the United Arab Emirates and Thailand, attended the meeting. The proclamation said that Brazil, Russia, India, and China also offered their complete support to South Africa for its BRICS Chairship in 2023 and the staging of the next BRICS Summit.
