Telecom companies Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel anticipate increased compliance demands as a result of the privacy standards established by the recently passed data privacy law.
‘Because the cellphone number we deal with exclusively is a consumer’s legal identification, we are likely to become a significant data fiduciary. We’ve started a number of things, like determining what data we need and when we need it, according to Gulshan Khurana, executive vice president of Vodafone Idea.
He was addressing a panel at the fourth ETTelecom Digital Telco Summit – 2023, which was conducted in conjunction with the TRAI Centre of Studies and Research.
‘For telcos, it is far more important because a range of entities, such those involved in market intelligence, SIM card manufacturers, or OTT companies, have access to our customer data. The mobile number, which serves as the identity, is everywhere digital, according to Khurana. ‘We anticipate how this law is implemented against us and the compliance.’
The telcos already have effective governance and security practices in place for the protection of data, according to Sanjeev Dhallam, vice president of core network and security at Bharti Airtel, who talked to ET.
