Economic Buzz: New Car Registrations In UK Continue to Fall

5 May 2022 , 04:09 PM

New car registrations in the UK fell 15.8% on year to 119,167 units in April, following a 14.3% fall in March, as global supply chain shortages, namely of semiconductors, have continued to constrain the delivery of new vehicles, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said Thursday. However, battery electric car registrations bucked the trend, up 40.9 percent. Meanwhile, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited revised its market outlook for 2022 lower to 1.72 million new cars now expected to be registered during the year. The agency observed that plug-in cars are anticipated to account for more than a quarter of market in 2022 but additional assurance is needed for more customers to make the switch.
