Government coming up with a Rs 2.44 lakh crore proposal for transmission lines for connecting renewable power plants to national grid

8 Dec 2022 , 02:56 PM

To connect renewable generation, Government has proposed a 2.44 trillion rupee ($29.6 billion) plan to develop transmission lines. By 2030, Government wants to triple its capacity for clean energy. According to a statement from the power ministry, the project will link wind farms in Tamil Nadu and solar plants in Rajasthan and Gujarat’s sun-drenched deserts to the national grid. By the end of the decade, it will enable India’s interregional transmission capacity to increase from 112 gigawatts to 150 gigawatts.

Renewable electricity has not been used much in India due to a shortage of transmission lines. For clean power to reach urban and industrial areas that are frequently far from generation sources, the country must overcome this shortfall as it sets out on its route to net zero by 2070.
