The Ministry of Power has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the implementation of an Early Warning System for vulnerable hydro projects/power stations.
The Ministry of Power and the DRDO will collaborate to develop appropriate mitigation measures for avalanches, landslides, glaciers, glacial lakes, and other geo-hazards.
The DRDO’s expertise will be leveraged for development of a comprehensive Early Warning System for vulnerable hydro projects/power stations in hilly areas. In accordance with the broad understanding developed through this MoU, separate and specific tasks will be developed between DRDO and the respective project developer(s).
The MoU was signed by Alok Kumar, Secretary of Power, and Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Defence (R&D) and Chairman of DRDO.
Union Minister of Power & NRE, R K Singh, has taken the initiative to implement an Early Warning System (EWS) in Hydro Power Projects, particularly those located in the upper reaches of hilly regions.
For the implementation of EWS, the Ministry of Power has already signed MoUs with CSIR-NGRI, IMD, WIHG, and NRSC-ISRO.
