According to a recent government directive, Nitin Gupta, an IRS officer, has been chosen to serve as the new central board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman.
Who is Gupta?
Gupta, a member of the Board who was hired by the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1986 and belongs to the Income Tax cadre, would retire in September of the following year.

The appointment of Shri Nitin Gupta, Member Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), as chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes, effective the date of assumption of the office, was authorized by the Cabinet’s Appointments Committee.
After J B Mohapatra departed on April 30, Board member and 1986-batch IRS officer Sangeeta Singh assumed additional responsibility for the CBDT chief position.
The CBDT has a Chairman at its helm and has a maximum of six members who hold the position of special secretary. It serves as the department’s governing body for the income tax division.
Currently, the Board has five members, with Anuja Sarangi, an IRS officer from the 1985 batch, being the most senior. The other members are Subashree Anantkrishnan and Pragya Sahay Saksena, both IRS employees who graduated in the class of 1987.
