The state-owned power company NTPC announced that it has initiated India’s first green hydrogen blending operation in its township’s PNG (piped natural gas) network in Kawas, Surat.
The project is a collaboration between NTPC and Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL). P Ram Prasad, Head of Project, Kawas, launched the first molecule of green hydrogen from the project in the presence of other senior executives from NTPC Kawas and GGL, stated the company in its statement.
Green hydrogen blending has begun in the NTPC Kawas township in Surat’s piped natural gas (PNG) network.
With the assistance of GGL officials, NTPC Kawas held awareness workshops for township residents following the start of the blending operation.
NTPC and GGL have worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone in record time following the Prime Minister’s foundation stone laying on July 30, 2022.
This system is designed to provide H2-NG (natural gas) to households in the Kawas township of Adityanagar, Surat. Green hydrogen is produced in Kawas by electrolysis of water using power from an existing 1 MW floating solar project.
The regulatory body, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), has approved a 5% vol/vol blending of green hydrogen with PNG to begin with, with the blending level gradually increasing to 20%.
At around 11.00 AM, NTPC was trading at Rs166.75, down by 0.51% against the previous close of Rs167.60 on NSE. The counter touched an intraday high and low of Rs168.50 and Rs166.35 respectively.
