Pulse output in this Kharif season expected to be down by 8%

5 Dec 2022 , 08:21 AM

Tur, Urad, and Moong are the three main pulses produced during the Kharif season. Tur production would be 9.8% lower year over year in the crop year 2022—2023, falling to 3.47 MMT from 3.84 MMT.

Karnataka’s tur output would fall by 10% to 0.84 MMT, Maharashtra’s by 23% to 0.90 MMT, and Telangana’s by 42% to 0.15 MMT, but Madhya Pradesh’s production would stay higher by 73% to 0.46 MMT. Farmers turned to more lucrative crops like cotton and soybeans, which resulted in a 5% decrease in area, which led to a decrease in production.

The crop year 2022—2023’s urad production would decrease by 12% year over year to 1.53 MMT from 1.74 MMT. Maharashtra’s urad production would decrease by 32% to 0.19 MMT, Uttar Pradesh’s by 9% to 0.35 MMT, and Rajasthan’s by 8% to 0.14 MMT, while Madhya Pradesh’s production would rise by 5% to 0.48 MMT.

While yields decreased by 2% as a result of heavy rains in late September and early October, just before crop harvest, production fell due to a 6% decrease in acreages as farmers decided to convert to soybean and cotton crops.

Moong is the only important Kharif pulse crop whose production is anticipated to rise by 3% year over year to 1.53 MMT from 1.48 MMT in the prior year. In the Kharif season, Rajasthan is the primary producer of the moong crop; due to an increase in yields, production would rise by 10% to 1 MMT.

Other important producing states, such as Maharashtra and Karnataka, would see production decline by 14% and 25%, respectively, to 0.14 MMT.
