Reliance-BP's MJ deep-water field to begin gas prodcution soon

9 Feb 2023 , 09:09 AM

According to a top official who talked to ET, the enormous MJ deep-water project in the KG-D6 block, owned by Reliance Industries Ltd. and UK-based BP, is about to begin production and will greatly increase gas supply from the valuable east coast asset. Sashi Mukundan, Regional President and Head of Country, India, BP Group, stated at India Energy Week here that the MJ field will be online this quarter.

Reliance and BP are investing nearly USD 5 billion in three separate projects to further expand KG-D6, with the goal of reviving gas production from the offshore asset. The third development, MJ, is already almost finished while the previous two, R-cluster and Satellite Cluster, have already begun producing gas.

The output of the two fields, which is currently approximately 20 million standard cubic metres per day, would increase to 30 mmscmd with MJ’s assistance, satisfying up to 15% of India’s gas demand.

The deepest gas discovery in the KG-D6 block will be brought to production by the two partners using a floating production system at high sea in the Bay of Bengal.

The Dhirubhai-1 and 3 (D1 and D3) fields, the first and largest fields in the KG-D6 block, are situated directly beneath the MJ-1 gas find, which is situated around 2,000 metres below them. A minimum of 0.988 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of dependent resources are thought to be stored in MJ-1. Oil deposits can be found in the field.

Underwater wells will deliver gas and oil to the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), where contaminants will be removed. Gas will travel to onshore through an undersea pipeline and then to customers while oil will be put onto tankers for sale to refineries. Reliance had last month announced that a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) was currently on the field site and that phase-II drilling and completion campaign was in process in its third-quarter earnings investor presentation. Production is anticipated to start in January–March.

The double-hulled FPSO manufactured by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea is designed to transport 60,000 barrels of liquid per day and approximately 12.7 million cubic metres of gas per day.

The Satellite Cluster went online in April 2020, while R-Cluster began production in December 2020. R-gas Cluster’s production is anticipated to plateau at around 12.9 mmscmd in 2021, while Satellite Cluster’s output will peak at 6 mmscmd. The highest output of the MJ field will be 12 mmscmd.

The MJ development is anticipated to be the third largest on the block, and the reservoirs are located around 2,000 metres below the producing D1-D3 gas fields.

In KG-D6, Reliance owns a 66.67% operated interest while BP owns the remaining 33.33%.
