Siemens AG, a German multinational technology firm, announced today that it intends to make India a centre for public transit solutions.
‘The $3 billion large order (from Indian Railways) will undoubtedly speed up component and locomotive manufacturing here,’ said Peter Koerte, Chief Technology Officer and Strategy Officer, Siemens AG, further adding that Siemens also has a site where it builds a lot of infrastructure solutions and wants to use India as a hub for mass transit solutions, which is a huge opportunity.
Siemens inked a Rs 26,000 crore ($3.25 billion) contract with Indian Railways earlier this year to provide and service electric locomotives for freight movement in India. The deal is the largest locomotive deal in Siemens Mobility’s history, as well as the company’s single-largest order in India.
Siemens will provide 1,200 high-capacity 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotives to the Railways as part of the arrangement, as well as provide servicing for the next 35 years. The deliveries would take place over the course of eleven years.
Siemens stated that it has engineering capacities in India (30 plants) and intends to create and explore how it can further improve this for the region.
Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services) and TRIL Urban Transport (a Tata Group Company) have created a joint venture to develop the metro corridor in Pune, Maharashtra, from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar.
Further, Siemens adds 100 digital use cases to Siemens Xcelerator and welcomes four ecosystem partners.
