Tata Motors Commits to Net-Zero Emissions by 2045, Explores Electric and Hydrogen Tech

28 Aug 2023 , 12:40 PM

Tata Motors has announced its commitment to transform its facilities into net-zero greenhouse gas emissions sites by 2045. The company, a significant player in India’s commercial vehicle sector and valued at USD 37 billion, plans to invest over Rs 2,000 crore annually in its commercial vehicle business to achieve this goal.

Executive Director Girish Wagh stated that Tata Motors is pursuing various technologies, including electric and hydrogen fuel, to achieve the net-zero emissions target.

Wagh emphasized that the company’s focus is on zero-emission vehicle technologies for its entire portfolio and ensuring that its facilities emit no CO2 or become net-zero CO2 emissions.

The company’s strategy includes technologies such as battery electric and hydrogen, applicable to internal combustion engines and fuel cell electric vehicles.

Tata Motors has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Jharkhand to establish a manufacturing facility for these technologies, starting with a priority on hydrogen internal combustion engines.

TCPL Green Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Tata Cummins Pvt Ltd, has partnered with the Jharkhand government to establish a manufacturing unit for powertrain solutions, including hydrogen internal combustion engines, battery and fuel cell electric vehicle systems, and fuel delivery systems.

The initial investment in the hydrogen facility in Jharkhand will exceed Rs 350 crore, focused on preparing the plant for hydrogen internal combustion engine production with an estimated annual capacity of around 10,000 units.

Tata Motors aims for a gradual increase in the penetration of zero-emission vehicles, with its Jamshedpur facility playing a central role due to its heavy commercial vehicle production and Tata Cummins Joint venture plant for engine manufacturing.

The company envisions the full enablement of the Jamshedpur plant to meet the requirements of zero-emission technologies and anticipates substantial adoption of these technologies.
