Tata Steel and Ford sign agreement for supply of Green Steel to the latter

27 Oct 2022 , 07:38 AM

After switching to hydrogen-based steel production, Tata Steel’s IJmuiden factory in the Netherlands will provide “zeremis green steel” to Ford, an American automaker.

Tata Steel is attempting to transition its steel production in the UK and the Netherlands to low-carbon technology in Europe.

The company’s CEO & MD T V Narendran and Executive Director and CFO Koushik Chatterjee told ET that both Tata Steel UK and Tata Steel Nederland have been developing comprehensive plans for the transition to low CO2 technology in line with the company’s goal to produce CO2-neutral steel by 2050 in Europe.

The IJmuiden steelworks will move to green hydrogen-based steelmaking if Tata Steel Nederland signs an MoU with Ford in Europe to supply the automaker with Zeremis green steel, according to a statement.

Ford is now the first company committed to buying the green steel that Tata Steel wants to produce using the hydrogen route, which is more environmentally friendly and sustainable than the way steel is currently made.

100% carbon neutrality is claimed for Zeremis carbon lite steel.

We will significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of our vehicles by using carbon-neutral steel, according to Sue Slaughter, Ford Purchasing Director, Supply Chain and Sustainability, in her statement to ET.
