With the debut of the Montra Electric 3W Auto in Chennai on Tuesday, TI Clean Mobility (TCM), a division of Tube Investments of India (TII), a firm in the Murugappa Group, joined the electric vehicle market.
The debut is a part of the group’s aim to aggressively focus on electric vehicles by releasing e-three-wheeler goods under the brand Montra Electric, electric tractors under the brand Cellestial Egat, and electric heavy commercial trucks through the Rhino 5536.
Within six months, according to the firm, items in each of these categories will be released. There will be three production sites for each of these categories, according to TCM Managing Director K K Paul: one in Ambattur for Montra Electric, one on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway for Cellestial, and one in Delhi-NCR for Rhino 5536.
The company said in August that it will spend close to Rs1,000 crore to develop at least four EV platform options. The Montra electric 3W range would cost a minimum of Rs3,02,000 (ex-showroom post-subsidy). Over 100 dealerships throughout the nation will carry the vehicle. A quarter of the Indian bicycle market is accounted by by TII, which produces recognizable brands like BSA and Hercules.
