The government is developing a new portal to track permissions for new coal blocks

13 Apr 2023 , 05:20 AM

According to Amrit Lal Meena, the coal secretary, the government is creating a portal to track and expedite permissions for newly assigned coal blocks.

The secretary met with representatives of captive and commercial coal block allottees to discuss strategies to boost coal production as well as other challenges. They were joined by Additional Coal Secretary and Nominated Authority M Nagaraju.

‘Early production of coal from freshly assigned blocks is dependent upon the prompt availability of land and other clearances. A portal for prompt monitoring and settlement of issues in this respect is being developed by the ministry’s designated authority, the secretary briefed stakeholders.

M. Nagaraju emphasized the ministry’s policy-level actions to boost coal production and streamline company operations to strengthen the sector’s allure.

He also emphasized the important changes made by the ministry to improve the auction system’s appeal and benefits in various tranches of commercial coal mine auctions.

On June 18, 2020, the ministry began the first-ever round of commercial bids for 38 coal mines.

87 coal mines have been auctioned up to this point in six commercial coal mine auction tranches. Their total Peak Rate Capacity (PRC) is 220.52 million tonnes annually, and their expected annual income is Rs 33,231 crore.

On March 29, the government began the seventh round of auctions, in which 106 coal mines, including those for lignite, were put up for sale.
