Vertex Hydrogen, a joint venture between Essar and Progressive Energy in the United Kingdom, announced on Thursday that it has signed agreements to supply over 1,000 MW of low-carbon hydrogen to leading industries in the region.
Vertex Hydrogen is currently building the UK’s first extensive, low-carbon hydrogen production center at Essar’s site in Ellesmere Port.
Vertex Hydrogen has announced, in a press release, that it will be involved in capturing and storing approximately 1.8 million metric tons of CO2 annually, as a part of the HyNet project. This measure is projected to bring down over 10% of the industrial emissions in the area, which is comparable to removing 750,000 cars from the roads.
Over $2 billion will be invested directly in the hydrogen plant and related regional hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure, securing and growing vital jobs in the region. This is the same amount of energy that powers a major city like Liverpool, and it secures Vertex’s entire initial hydrogen production capacity as well as critical hydrogen infrastructure investments in the region.
The demand for hydrogen is driven by global businesses operating in the region that want to be the first low carbon operations in a number of key sectors by switching from high carbon fuels to low carbon hydrogen.
