The purchase of "Ruby" from South Korea by Reliance-BP will increase local gas production

5 Sep 2022 , 08:44 AM

The floating production, storage, and offloading vessel Ruby, which is bound for Reliance Industries Ltd’s MJ deep-water oil and gas development project in the KG-D6 block, has departed from South Korea, according to Reliance-BP CEO Bernard Looney.

The third and final discovery being developed in the eastern offshore area by Reliance and its partner BP of the UK is MJ. The two will bring the deepest gas discovery in the KG-D6 block to production by using a floating production system at the high sea in the Bay of Bengal.

“‘Ruby’ has now departed on a 5000-kilometer voyage from South Korea to Kakinada, India, where she will assist in boosting domestic gas output.

“Even though I’ve worked in this field for a very long time, the sheer magnitude and engineering prowess of vessels like these constantly astound me. bp and Reliance Industries Limited employees deserve a lot of credit for completing this project safely and effectively “Looney posted on LinkedIn.

The Dhirubhai-1 and 3 (D1 and D3) fields, the first and largest fields in the KG-D6 block, are situated directly beneath the MJ-1 gas find, which is situated around 2,000 metres below them. A minimum of 0.988 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of dependent resources are thought to be stored in MJ-1. Additionally, the area contains oil resources that might be extracted utilising a floating platform known as an FPSO.

The engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contract for Ruby’s construction was granted to Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea in 2019. The double-hulled ship has a daily petroleum production capability of 60,000 barrels and a daily gas production capacity of 12.7 million cubic metres.

Through three separate projects in block KG-D6 – R Cluster, Satellite Cluster, and MJ – Reliance and BP are investing about USD 5 billion in the further development of KG-D6. These projects, when combined, are anticipated to produce about 30 million standard cubic metres of natural gas per day by 2023.

While the Satellite Cluster went online in April of last year, R-Cluster began manufacturing in December 2020. MJ is anticipated to launch before the year is through.

The MA field stopped producing in 2019, but the D-1 and D-3 fields stopped producing in February 2020. In order to start production on other finds, the government has either demanded their surrender or taken them away.

With a 66.67% participating interest, Reliance is the block’s operator, and BP owns a 33.33% holding.
