According to data released on Wednesday by aviation regulator DGCA, domestic air passenger traffic registered a growth of 8.98% yoy in February despite a slowing economy and a lean travel season.

InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) continued its market dominance as it carried nearly one in every two passengers. Its market share, however, remained at 47.9% in February, similar to that in January. The airline carried 5.93 million passengers last month, down from nearly 6.12 million passengers in January.

SpiceJet flew 1.89 million passengers, achieving a 15.3% market share.

The market shares of Air India, GoAir, AirAsia India and Vistara was 12%, 10%, 7.3% and 6.7%, respectively last month.

DGCA said that “the passenger load factor in February 2020 has shown increasing trend primarily due to airlines offering promotional fares resulting in increased demand.”

However, the growth of domestic air passenger traffic has once again been adversely affected by travel restrictions due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
