Employees of the software services company HCLTech are required to report to work three times a week; if they don’t, they will be subject to disciplinary action, which will begin on February 19. In line with competitors like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, who have required staff members to work from the office five days a week, ten days a month, and three days a week, respectively, the letter from the third-largest IT business in India follows suit.
Vikas Sharma, global head of people function DFS at HCLTech, was quoted in an email dated February 14 as saying, ‘All DFS (Digital Foundation Services) employees, irrespective of their band (E0 and above), will be required to work from their designated HCLTech offices for a minimum of three days per week.’
According to a representative for HCLTech, the company uses a hybrid work paradigm in which staff members must work three days a week from the office.
According to an employee who asked to remain anonymous, ‘management is warning of leave without pay if employees don’t report to office three days a week, in HR meetings.’
The worker went on to say that staff members are asked to maintain a minimum of eight hours of laptop use, and that productivity is being rigorously monitored. The worker went on, ‘If this time is not met, escalations will occur.’
‘Non-compliance… will be treated as unauthorised absence and call for disciplinary action in line with company policy,’ the business stated in the message.
According to HCLTech, the leadership team and top managers have already made the switch to a hybrid work schedule and are in the office for at least three days a week. The memo stated, ‘Effective February 19, 2024, all employees of Digital Foundation Services, including E0 to E3, will be subject to the same hybrid work model.’
For comparison, the average employee in the E3 band has between eight and ten years of experience.
It is the responsibility of reporting supervisors to make sure that the ‘SMM Portal’ is updated with each employee’s shift schedule. On all five days, new hires undergoing training or on-the-job training must work from the office.
Of the top five Indian IT companies, HCLTech had the greatest performance for the December quarter, reporting a 6.23% YoY increase in net profit at ₹4,351 Crore. Contrary to the trend of a decline among its large-cap competitors, HCLTech’s net headcount climbed by 3,617 employees in the third quarter.
