Sateesh is the CEO & Co-founder at BigHaat and is responsible for strategic leadership. He is closely involved in the process of planning and development of newer frameworks whilst enhancing current procedures. Prior to co-founding BigHaat, Sateesh had co-founded ATCS Labs, a startup where they built India’s first smart irrigation controller to improve crop yield for farmers.
Before the entrepreneurial journey, Sateesh was with Honeywell for close to a decade where his work resulted in four patents in Application of Technology for Industrial Safety. He has worked in various global leadership roles building large products and systems leading global engineering teams.
In an interaction with Shweta Papriwal, Editor, indiainfoline.com Mr. Sateesh Nukala, CEO & Co-Founder, BigHaat, said "Farmers need high quality and highly relevant agri inputs to reduce the impact of pests and diseases to be able to increase yields and crop quality, with on-time crop advisory".

How was the idea of Bighaat conceptualized?

BigHaat was co-founded by Sachin Nandwana and me after witnessing the day-to-day challenges faced by the farmers as we both come from strong agricultural family backgrounds.

With decades of our technology and product experience, we believed in transforming the lives of farmers by disrupting the sector with a technology led platform and that is how BigHaat came into being.

Farmers need high quality and highly relevant agri inputs to reduce the impact of pests and diseases to be able to increase yields and crop quality, with on-time crop advisory. This is a critical requirement for the farmers throughout the crop cycle that is fulfilled by BigHaat.

BigHaat is India’s largest   Agri Inputs tech enabled marketplace platform helping farmers from sowing till harvesting, providing crop advisory and accessibility to a wide range of high-quality farm inputs leveraging the power of data, science and technology.

What problem is Bighaat solving?

Farmers face challenges in the traditional supply-chain model with conventional retailers being unable to offer technical crop advisory, and exploiting the farmers with inferior and higher cost of inputs, leading to lower yields and lower income for the farmers.

We at BigHaat are addressing these challenges through our tech enabled farmer-centric platform connecting high quality input manufacturers with the farmers directly. BigHaat’s platform provides stage wise technical crop advisory that enables the farmers to choose highly relevant inputs at every stage of the crop cycle very conveniently. With our unique product and solution strategy, we have been offering a holistic personalized experience to the farmer throughout the lifecycle of the crop, offering the content in vernacular languages, and enriching their knowledge.

We recently released a comprehensive agri input stack backed by the robust network of satellites, agronomists & farmers with an aim to deliver autonomous surveillance & crop care in real time. We are proud to be the first startup in agri-tech space to pull it off to help the farmer community.

What has changed post the pandemic for BigHaat?

We have observed a splurge in rural active internet users as they can easily afford internet and smartphones. Farmers are increasingly adapting to digital platforms for information and various services to ease their work and use the latest technology to benefit their work. With Covid19, it accelerated this journey of digital adoption. We have been  focusing aggressively to reach  farmers through all the digital channels and offering content in vernacular languages. BigHaat aims to empower farmers  with a simple user-friendly interface and personalized advisory which we think will continue to be the key to our success story.

BigHaat being the leader in e-commerce space, we got a great opportunity to serve and impact lakhs of farmers across India by providing on-time crop advisory and high-quality inputs that lead to continuity of crops on the fields for farmers. BigHaat was the only player who could operate without a break across India seamlessly even during peak pandemic period. This was done by obtaining special permission from the Government as we were serving the essential sector and working with logistics players. Farmers from over 50% of India’s pincode have come and transacted on the platform.

Due to the strong tailwinds from Covid impact and exponential growth in rural internet coupled by strong agri reforms by the government, we have witnessed 5x in user growth and 3x growth in transactions YoY, most of this growth has come organically to BigHaat.

What is the USP of BigHaat?

We offer a highly personalized experience for each farmer based on - weather in their geography, stage of the crop and geo location. With our experience in the past five years of our existence, we thought it imperative to connect the community of farmers so that they could exchange ideas and thoughts to help and enable the community as a whole.

All these steps have led our repeat visitors to increase from 30% to more than 55% in one year. 80% of the farmers on our platform have been acquired digitally and the remaining 20% through a feet-on-the-street model.

Farmers need high quality and highly relevant agri inputs to reduce the impact of pests and diseases to be able to increase yields and crop quality, with on-time crop advisory. This is a critical requirement for the farmers throughout the crop cycle that is fulfilled by BigHaat.
BigHaat is enabling farmers by offering technical crop advisory, high quality agri inputs and thus leading to higher yields and higher income for the farmers.
