How to make online nominations for your EPF account?

Here is what you need to know about the steps to assign the designated nominee online.

When you are working for an organization, one of the long term mandatory savings you make is in the employee provident fund (EPF) account. It is highly tax efficient because contributions are eligible for Section 80C benefits to the maximum of Rs150,000 per year. In addition, the interest paid is entirely tax free and the employer contribution is also treated as tax free income in your hands. What a lot of employees do not do is to designate a nominee for the EPF account. If the nominee is designated in advance, then in unfortunate event, your family members do not have to run from pillar to post to get the EPF accumulated money with accrued interest. Here is what you need to know about the steps to assign the designated nominee online.
 
Steps to e-nominate the designated person for EPF account
 
The e-nomination facility has recently been launched by the EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Some logical steps need to be undertaken for the same.
 
Step 1: Ensure that your UAN is activated. The Universal Account Number is a 12-digit number that is assigned to every account holder by the EPFO. This remains the same even if you change your jobs. There are two things for you to do. Firstly, activate the UAN number (available on your PF slip) and secondly link your Aadhar to the UAN. This linking is mandatory for any online nomination for the EPF account. Aadhar linking can also be done online with OTP authentication. Before you start ensure that your Aadhar is already mobile enabled.
 
Step 2: For e-nomination of EPF, you are required to provide basic details like Aadhaar number, residential address, date of birth, mobile number, and bank account details with IFSC etc. In addition, you must also provide scanned copies of photographs of all nominees, under the new e-nomination rules.
 
Step 3: You can now login  to the EPF portal, www.epfindia.gov.in and sign with your UAN number and password. The website also has a second level authentication in the form of a captcha code. Before starting the e-nomination registration ensure that your own photograph is first uploaded under the profile section. That is mandatory.
 
Step 4: To start the actual e-nomination click on the “Manage Account” link and the first question you will asked is whether you have a family. If you choose “Yes", the system will ask family details and their scanned photographs. You can add the details of all family members by clicking “Add New button". After giving family details you can save family details for future use.
 
Step 5: You have the option of defining percentage nomination for nominees. The default is an equal share to all members. This nomination page has some inbuilt quality check links to ensure that all the relevant family members are added. Once you save you are ready to go to the next step. In case you don’t have a family or you don’t want to nominate anyone from the family, you can choose the “No” tab. The system will directly ask you to add details for EPF nomination. Here you can enter details of your EPF nominations and upload scanned photographs of all nominees. You are free to add as many names as possible and the default is again equal for all nominees. However, you are free to define percentages too.
 
Step 6: The next step is to authenticate this Aadhar nomination registration. You can e-sign with your Aadhar card. In this case, the Aadhar will generate a 16-digit Virtual ID, which is mandatory for authenticating the nomination change.
 
Step 7: To be fair, this is not entirely online. As a last step, post the Aadhar verification the EPF holder is required to download a copy of nomination form No. 2 in PDF format and save the file as “Employee Code. Name of member". Apart from you, every nominee member must also share a PDF copy of Nomination form 2 with your HR Department after downloading it from EPFO member’s portal. Once the HR department receives and acknowledges, this nomination is registered within a few days. The process of e-nomination is complete.
