MFs invest Rs. 35bn in equity in April: SEBI

There were a total of 1,209 schemes under mutual funds as on May 31

Mutual funds made net investment of Rs. 303.48 billion in the secondary market in May 2013 as compared to Rs. 504.32 billion in April 2013, according to SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) data.

Like the previous months, mutual funds invested Rs. 35.08 billion in equity in April 2013 compared to Rs. 14.23 billion sold in March 2013.

Mutual funds invested Rs. 268.40 billion in debt market in May 2013 as against Rs. 518.55 billion in April 2013.

As on May 31, 2013 there were a total of 1,209 schemes under mutual funds of which income / debt oriented schemes were 773 (63.9%), growth/ equity oriented scheme were 346 (28.6%), exchange traded funds were 37 schemes (3.1%), balanced schemes were 32 (2.6%) and fund of funds investing overseas schemes were 21 (1.7%).

The number of schemes at the end of 2012-13 was 1,294 of which income / debt oriented schemes were 857 (66.2%), growth / equity oriented scheme were 347 (26.8%), ETFs were 37 schemes (2.9%), balanced schemes were 32 (2.5%) and fund of funds were 21 (1.6%).

S&P BSE Sensex closed at 19,760.3 on May 31, 2013, as against 19,504.2 on April 30, 2013, registering an increase of 256.1 points (1.3 percent). During May 2013, Sensex recorded an intraday high of 20,443.6 on May 20, 2013 and an intraday low of 19,451.3 on May 2, 2013.

CNX Nifty closed at 5,986 on May 31, 2013 compared to 5,930 on April 30, 2013, indicating an increase of 55.8 points (0.9 percent). During May, Nifty recorded an intraday high of 6,229.5 on May 20, 2013 and an intraday low of 5,911.0 on May 2, 2013.
