Auto stocks witness volatile session; TVS Motor, Ashok Leyland, M&M in red

Auto companies on the first two days of every month usually present their sales performance data.

Auto stocks on Monday witnessed a volatile session. After clocking 8,000-mark, the Nifty Auto has pared its early gains. The performance was swayed after major automakers have announced their September 2020 sales performance.

At around 2.56 PM, Nifty Auto is trading at 7,943.60, down 0.28%. On the index, Bharat Forge at Rs462.65 per piece up 3.24% led the gainers' list. The stock was joined by Exide Industries at Rs168.20 per piece up 3.19%. While stocks like MRF (Rs60,870 per piece), Tata Motors (Rs134.10 per piece) and Amara Raja Batteries (Rs757.25 per piece) were trading gradually up.

On the other hand, the underperforming stocks involved TVS Motor at Rs467.30 per piece down 2.63%, followed by Ashok Leyland at Rs75.25 per piece below 1.31%, Balkrishna Industries at Rs1,446.25 per piece lower by 1.15% and Hero Motocorp at Rs3,119.50 per piece down 1.01%.

Other stocks like Bajaj Auto, Motherson Sumi, Bosch, M&M, Maruti Suzuki and Eicher Motors were trading on a negative note.

Here is the list of some of the major automaker's sales performance in September 2020.

Hero Motocorp: Registered record sales of 7,15,718 units in September 2020, increasing by 16.9% over the corresponding month of the previous year (September 2019), when the company had sold 6,12,204 units.

Tata Motors: In September 2020, the company's domestic sales stood at 44,444 units rising by 37% against 32,376 units in September 2019. Passenger vehicle (PV) sales were at 21,199 units in September 2020, increasing by 163% compared to sales of 8,097 units in the same month of the previous year.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M): Recorded sales of 35,920 vehicles in September 2020, registering a decline of 17% compared to sales of 43,343 vehicles in the same month of the previous year.

Bajaj Auto: The company recorded a rise of 10% in total sales to 4.41 lakh units in September 2020 as compared to 4.02 lakh units in September 2019.

Maruti Suzuki: Posted a total sales of 160,442 units in September 2020, registering a growth of 30.8% over the same period the previous year. Total sales include domestic sales of 150,040 units and 2,568 units for other OEMs. Additionally, exports were at 7,834 units in September 2020.

Ashok Leyland: Registered total sales (domestic and export) of 8,344 units in September 2020. The total sales dropped by 5% from 8,780 sales recorded in September 2019.

TVS Motor: Registered a sales growth of 14% in September 2020 with 327,692 units against 287,398 units in August 2020. A year ago the same month, the company recorded sales of 315,796 units.

Eicher Motors: The company sold 60,041 of Royal Enfield in September 2020, compared to 59,500 units in the same month a year ago, registering merely 1% growth.
