Domestic Air Traffic drops 58% yoy in Sept 2020; Indigo's market share continue to rise this year

Majority airlines saw a contraction in passenger load factors (PLF).

Domestic airlines carried 440.60 lakhs passengers during September 2020, declining by 58.39% from 1058.91 lakh passengers carried in the same month a year ago. However, on a month-on-month (MoM) basis, domestic air traffic dropped by 65.82% compared to 39.43 lakh passengers carried in the previous month.

Majority airlines saw a contraction in passenger load factors (PLF). Indigo's PLF stood muted at 65.4% in September 2020, compared to 65.6% in August 2020. While SpiceJet's PLF was at 73% in the latest month against 76% of the previous month.

GoAir, Air Asia and Vistara recorded a PLF of 57.6%, 58.4% and 66.7% in September 2020, compared to 61%, 64.4% and 68.3% in August 2020.

National carrier Air India recorded a PLF of 57.9% in September 2020, compared to 58.6% in August 2020.

DGCA said the passenger load factor in Sept 2020 has shown some recovery due to increased demand after the opening of Lockdown.

Further, the overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the latest month was at 2.58%. The cancellation rate for Air India stood at 10.62%, SpiceJet at 1.44%,  Indigo at 1.17%, Vistara at 1.08%, Air Asia at 0.13% and GoAir at 0.08% in September 2020.

In September 2020, a total of 450 passenger related complaints had been received by the scheduled domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for September 2020 has been around 1.14.

By end of July - September 2020 quarter, Indigo continues to hold leadership with a market share of 58.8%, followed by SpiceJet with 14.1% share, Air India with 9.5% share, GoAir with 5.4% share, Air Asia with 6.3% share and Vistara with 5.5% market share.

Indigo is the only airline which has witnessed an increase in its market share this year, compared to other carriers.
