Nifty ended Apr-21 losing -0.41%. That masks the sector-level action with a handful of sectors and stocks doing extremely well. Steel and pharma were the big stories even as banks, FMCG stocks, IT and autos did worse than the Nifty.

The big positive story in Apr-21 was metals with JSW Steel gaining 61.2% and Tata Steel gaining 34.8% in the month. Steel rally was driven by upsurge in steel demand, uptick in China growth and strong steel prices.

Another big gainer in Apr-21 was pharma. Reddy Labs gained 17.2% in the month, Cipla gained 15.6% and Sun Pharma 11.5%. Apart from the COVID vaccination opportunities, investors also saw pharma as a safe haven.

There were also some stock specific winner stories. Wipro gained 22% in the month on the new direction given by its new CEO. Bajaj Finserv gained 16.6% on solid results expectations which it actually delivered.

There were losers too. Indiabulls Housing and Zee fell 8.5% and 7.2% on unfavourable news flows. HCL Tech lost 6.2% after disappointing results. Auto companies like Maruti, Eicher Motors and M&M were among the top losers on worries of a drop in Apr-21 auto numbers.
